My Experience of the Flavour Generator

Good morning all and happy Friday! It’s been a little while since I’ve posted regularly on here, but I’m really pleased to say that I’m back on it. With more time on my hands over the summer and a head full of ideas (you should see my notebook!), I can’t wait to get well and truly stuck in. I’ve got lots of exciting posts lined up, so keen your eyes peeled and don’t forget to sign up to my mailing list so you don’t miss anything over the coming weeks.

I’m kicking things off this July with a review about the new HelloFresh Flavour Generator. I find it useful to read people’s experiences, be that about a product, a place, or an event. It helps me to decide whether I think I’d like to give it a go. Although a recipe box isn’t usually my thing, I thought it would be a nice chance to try something new. I like the idea behind their Flavour Generator – to help make meal planning simple and to make dinners exciting, delicious and varied – and felt inspired to share this with you. As usual, all the opinions are entirely my own. I’m not here to promote things just for the sake of it and I’ll always be sure to let you know if something is really up!

So what is the Flavour Generator?

For those of you who don’t already know, HelloFresh is a recipe box delivery services that aims to provide everyone with high quality ingredients and the knowledge of how to cook them. There is a huge variety of recipes on their website, so deciding which ones to go for can be a bit overwhelming.

That’s where the Flavour Generator comes in… You get to choose the cuisine and the taste, and then the Flavour Generator comes up with a few recipe ideas for you. It’s a great chance to brand out from you usual weekly repertoire.

  • Cuisine: I went for Italian as I’m off to Florence next week for a few days break with my best friends, so thought it the perfect opportunity to get into the Italian swing (bring on pasta, pizza and gelato I say!).
  • Taste: I usually go spicy when I cook myself, so I went for tangy. To be honest, I was intrigued as to what the Flavour Generator would come up with and it did not disappoint.
  • The Result: Basil and Lemon – two of my favourite classic ingredients.

Out of the two dishes it came up with, I went for the dish on the left: Mediterranean Style Gnocchi with Basil Baked Cod.  Although the 40 minutes time frame is slightly longer than some of the recipes on the HelloFresh website, I didn’t mind as it sounded really taste and simple enough to make. I was also really tempted by the gnocchi aspect of the dish, as I couldn’t remember the last time I’d eaten gnocchi. Gnocchi is “a sort of pasta for potato lovers”. This seems such a fitting description as I love both and the perfect choice for a summers evening. Who wouldn’t welcome the chance to combine the two?!

So was the recipe any good?

Honestly? Yes! It was delicious and it was satisfying, without being too heavy. What I really loved is that it wasn’t too fancy. The recipe was easy to follow and it didn’t contain any obscure ingredients. I added a couple of handfuls of extra spinach as I love my greens, but other than that kept it exactly as instructed. Everything could be brought in a local supermarket should I wish to recreate the dish again. I also had the pleasure of sharing the dish with a friend of mine and can happily add that she loved it too. Two happy ladies with very happy tummies!
